The Flashes are golden!

Girls lax team wins state championship for the first time in school history

Sayville girls varsity lacrosse encapsulated their perfect 21-0 season when they defeated Rye 9-5 at Cortland High School last Saturday to win the 2024 Class C New York State Championship. 

This postseason, the Golden Flashes dominated Westhampton Beach in the Suffolk Semifinals 11-4; dethroned the champs when they beat their nearest geographical rival, Bayport-Blue Point 9-7; shellacked Wantagh 12-4 to take the Long Island crown; outlasted Our Lady of Mercy 13-8 on Friday; and reached the nirvana with a 9-5 triumph over Rye when they took the Empire State crown in Cortland, which is known as the Crown City.

In the clash of the titans, the Sayville Golden Flashes came in with an impeccable 20-0 record while the Rye Garnets sported an admirable 19-3. At the end of the first period, it was 2-2.

Sayville then governed their adversary in the second frame scoring five goals. Junior midfielder Sophia Buffardi notched four goals in the second. The sturdy defense came up clutch pitching a shutout in the second quarter as defenders Lucy Livingston, Delaney Lutz, Courtney Thornton, Loghan McNamara and Goaltender Julia Lilienthal between the pipes led the charge and the Golden Flashes were shining with a 7-2 lead at the end of 24 minutes of play.

Rye scored two goals in the triadic frame exceeding Sayville’s one and it was 8-4 Sayville at the conclusion of 36 minutes. Sophomore attacker Jenna Messina tallied three goals and freshman sensation, who also plays attack, Dylan McNamara summated a free position goal. Sophomore goalie Julia Lilienthal made seven saves with a 58 percent save percentage defending the net.

Sayville’s preeminent season came to a blissful conclusion as they defeated Rye 9-5 in the state title game! The Flashes are golden as they eclipsed history in 2024 winning the Class C New York State Championship for the first time in school history!
